Probing into regional ozone and particulate matter pollution in the United States: 1. A 1 year CMAQ simulation and evaluation using surface and satellite data

Abstract: [1] As part 1 in a series of papers describing long-term simulations using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system and subsequent process analyses and sensitivity simulations, this paper presents a comprehensive model evaluation for the full year of 2001 over the continental U.S. using both ground-based and satellite measurements. CMAQ is assessed for its ability to reproduce concentrations and long-term trends of major criteria pollutants such as surface ozone (O 3 ) and fine particulate m… Show more

“…Operational evaluation was not only a focus of AQMEII but has generally been the most widely used approach in the past for both offline (Trukenmüller et al, 2004;Schlünzen and Meyer, 2007;Appel et al, 2008;Wang et al, 2009;Zhang et al, 2009a;Liu et al, 2010) and online coupled models (Zhang et al, 2010a(Zhang et al, , b, 2012c(Zhang et al, , d, 2013Knote et al, 2011;Tuccella et al, 2012).…”

“…The protocols for performance evaluation follow those used in Zhang et al (2009Zhang et al ( , 2012a, including spatial distributions, temporal variation including daily values over the whole domain and hourly values at specific sites, and domainwide statistics. Statistics includes the mean bias (MB), mean gross error (MGE), the root mean squared error (RMSE), the normalized mean bias (NMB), the normalized mean error (NME), correlation coefficient (Corr), and index of agreement (IOA).…”

“…For the climatological application, only satellite observations of column abundance were used to assess the chemical prediction because of the shortage in surface air quality observations during 2006-2010. The performance statistical analyses were performed following Zhang et al (2006Zhang et al ( , 2009a. The statistical parameters included correlation coefficient (R), mean bias (MB), normalized mean biases (NMB), mean absolute gross error (MAGE), and root mean square error (RMSE).…”
