Probing Elemental Abundances in SNR 1987A usingXMM‐Newton

Abstract: A two-shock model representing plasmas in nonequilibrium ionization is fitted to the EPIC pn spectra, yielding temperatures of $0.4 and $3 keV, as well as elemental abundances for N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe. We demonstrate that the abundance ratio of N and O can be constrained to less than $20% accuracy.

“…As is customary for SNR 1987A, we give absorbed fluxes, so comparisons between various observatories are easier (because they do not depend on the column densities obtained from the fit). The fluxes up to January 2009 are fully consistent with the results from Heng et al (2008) and Sturm et al (2010), which used the same data.…”

“…This model gives slightly better fits than when using a two-component model (e.g. Park et al 2004;Heng et al 2008). The high-and lowtemperature components are believed to originate from the interaction of the shocks with uniform material and denser clumps in the ER, respectively (D12).…”

“…These include an inventory of the nucleosynthesis products, (e.g., Heng et al 2008), and examinations of specific isotopes, (e.g., 55 Fe, Leising 2006). Exhaustive study has been made of shock structure, ionization stages, and internal shock velocities (Dewey et al 2008;Gröningsson et al 2008;Heng & McCray 2007;Reighard & Drake 2007;Haberl et al 2006).…”
