Probing confinement resonances by photoionizing Xe inside a C60+molecular cage

Abstract: Double photoionization accompanied by loss of n C atoms (n = 0, 2, 4, 6) was investigated by merging beams of Xe@C + 60 ions and synchrotron radiation and measuring the yields of product ions. The giant 4d dipole resonance of the caged Xe atom has a prominent signature in the cross section for these product channels, which together account for 6.2 ± 1.4 of the total Xe 4d oscillator strength of 10. Compared to that for a free Xe atom, the oscillator strength is redistributed in photon energy due to multipath i… Show more

“…Future work could include other diatomic and polyatomic molecules, vibrationally resolved results, and studies of double excitation and other interchannel interactions. In related work, there is significant interest in confinement resonances that arise in photoionization of atoms contained in C 60 molecular cages [62]. Strong nondipole effects have been predicted in photoionization calculations on confined atoms [63,64].…”

“…The figure has been taken from CSR storage ring. In addition, even more heavy species will become accessible such as (endohedral) fullerene ions which also exhibit strong collective photoionization resonances (Scully et al 2005, Phaneuf et al 2013, and references therein).…”

“…After submission of this article Phaneuf et al [48] published an experimental and theoretical study of confinement resonances of photoionized Xe encaged in C + 60 . They found unprecedented evidence of redistribution of oscillator strength due to multipath interference of the excited photoelectron.…”
