Probable Genes for Leaf Rust Resistance in Several Hard Red Spring Wheats1

Abstract: Reaction to different Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici cultures was used to determine probable genotypes for seedling resistance in several hard spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars grown in North Dakota. Many of the cultivars studied can be combined into groups on the basis of sharing the same genes for resistance. Several cultivars probably have Lr2a and/or Lrl0 and a few contained Lrl. It is likely that most of these cultivars have genes in addition to those determined by this method as well as ge… Show more

“…If necessary, the symbols '+' or '-' are added to indicate minor differences of infection severity; the letter C was used for cases with significant chlorosis. Postulation of resistance genes was carried out as proposed by Statler (1984): based on the low infection types after gene interaction, the genes resistant to P. graminis f.sp. tritici contained by the tested cultivars were postulated.…”

“…Five Lr genes (Lr3, Lr9, Lr10, Lr26 and Lr29) each giving 33.33% frequencies within three cultivars. The method was previously reported as a quick method to serve breeding for rust resistance [11,12,[24][25][26][27][28][29][30].…”

“…Multipathotypes test of P. triticina isolates on wheat (also called gene postulation) was used to postulate leaf rust resistance genes in Egyptian wheat cultivars according to the method of Browder & Eversmeyer [11] and Statler [12] All plant materials (five grains per entry) were grown in plastic pots (10 cm. diam.).…”

“…Resistances were identifi ed using the postulation method (Brückner, 1964;Statler, 1984;Jensen et al, 1992;and others (Dreiseitl, 2007c). In 2009 and 2010, the resistance tests were conducted on leaf segments as follows.…”
