Probability of COVID-19 infection by cough of a normal person and a super-spreader

Abstract: In this work, we estimate the probability of an infected person infecting another person in the vicinity by coughing in the context of COVID-19. The analysis relies on the experimental data of Simha and Rao [“Universal trends in human cough airflows at large distances,” Phys. Fluids 32 , 081905 (2020)] and similarity analysis of Agrawal and Bhardwaj [“Reducing chances of COVID-19 infection by a cough cloud in a closed space,” Phys. Fluids 32 , 101704 (2020)] to det… Show more

“…Covid-19 virus is a very infectious virus which can be transmitted from a person to another in a number of ways and its spread primarily occurs via respiratory droplets either directly or indirectly (Scully 2020 ). A person can be directly infected from an infected person within a near vicinity of one meter (Agrawal and Bhardwaj 2021 ). When a person who is infected talks, coughs or sneezes to exhale droplets, these droplets may fall on the person's surroundings, such as objects and surfaces (Scully 2020 ).…”

“…3 Additionally, cough is a key event in the transmission of COVID-19 and other respiratory pathogens. 4 Given the intrinsic subjectivity of existing cough monitoring tools, mostly based on self-reported questionnaires, there is a great interest in developing an automated system to objectively register coughs. Attempts to achieve this date back to the 1950s, but until recently, important technological constraints limited significant advances.…”

“…If the fitness value is less than 30% of the lower bound of the host individual (least fitness among the host sub population) then the chromosome becomes a part of the virus sub population. The lower bound of the fitness in the virus population is termed as "super spreader" [17]. The chromosome whose fitness is intermediate between host and virus becomes a part of incubation sub population.…”
