Probability Model of Corrosion-Induced Cracking Time in Chloride-Contaminated Reinforced Concrete

Abstract: Corrosion-induced concrete cover cracking caused by chloride ion is an important indication of durability limit state for marine reinforced concrete (RC) structures and can ultimately determine the structural service life. In this paper, considering the random nature of factors affecting the corrosion cracking process, a probabilistic model which expands on the deterministic model of cover cracking time is developed by using Monte Carlo simulation technique. The results showed that the time to corrosion cracki… Show more

“…Many time-varying models have been established for the reinforced concrete protective layer, such as the Funahashi model, the Rodriguez model, and the Niu Taotao model. , This paper employed the Youping Liu theoretical model, which considers the influence of the corrosion products on the concrete diffusion around the steels and approximates the surrounding concrete pore transition zone to steel. The circumference of the thick ring was inversely proportional to the thickness of the oxide layer.…”

“…The ratio ρa/ρf corresponds to Vf/Va, where Vf represents the volume of the free-expanded corrosion product, and Va approximates the volume of the accumulated corrosion product (approximated as the consumed steel volume). Given that Vf/Va equals the volume expansion ratio (Vf/Va 5 1.7, as cited in [33]), Equation ( 13) can be expressed as:…”

“…Concerning the deck age decision point in Figure 2, the study conducted by Kirkpatrick et al pointed out that the time for chloride to reach and initiate corrosion varies greatly between bridge decks, depending on various factors (20). Although for some bridges it may take only 10 years for corrosion to be initiated, in most cases this time is up to more than 30 years (20)(21)(22)(23). The selected 10-year decision point therefore can be justified when, on the basis of the studies mentioned above, it is very unlikely that corrosion initiates in bridge decks that are under 10 years of age.…”
