Probabilistic Analysis of Strip Footings Resting on Spatially Varying Soils and Subjected to Vertical or Inclined Loads

Abstract: A probabilistic analysis of vertically and obliquely loaded strip footings resting on a spatially varying soil is presented. The system responses are the footing vertical and horizontal displacements. The deterministic computation of these system responses is based on numerical simulations using the software FLAC3D. Both cases of isotropic and anisotropic random fields are considered for the soil elastic properties. The uncertainty propagation methodology employed makes use of a nonintrusive approach to build … Show more

“…There are several papers addressing differential settlements (Akbas and Kulhawy, 2009;Al-Bittar and Soubra, 2014;Griffiths, 2002, 2005;Frantziskonis and Breysse, 2003;Honjo and Otake, 2013), but there is no simple method to assess differential settlement resulting from inherent soil variability. In practice, the magnitude is roughly estimated based on estimated total settlements.…”

“…For example, Blatman and Sudret employed the stepwise regression technique and the least angle regression technique to select important terms, discarding unimportant terms, for a sparse representation. The application of SPCEs to probabilistic analysis of geotechnical problems can be found in previous stuies …”

“…For instance, in Eurocode 7, the recommended reliability index for the ultimate limit‐state design is 3.8, corresponding to a failure probability of 7.23 × 10 −5. In previous PCE metamodellings, PCEs are often combined with MCS for probabilistic analysis. Even though the classical MCS is straightforward and robust, it is subjected to low convergence.…”
