PurposeNotwithstanding the Geographical Information System (GIS) being a fast-emerging green area of a digital revolution, the available studies focus on different subject areas of application in the construction industry, with no study that clarifies its knowledge strands. Hence, this systematic review analyses GIS core area of application, its system integration patterns, challenges and future directions in the construction industry.Design/methodology/approachA systematic review approach was employed, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist. A total of 60 articles published between 2011 and 2022 were identified, thoroughly reviewed and analysed using thematic analysis.FindingsThe analysis revealed spatial planning and design, construction-task tracking, defect detection and safety monitoring as its four main application-based areas. The findings showed that the adoption of GIS technology is rapidly expanding and being utilised more in building projects to visual-track construction activities. The review discovered an integrated pattern involving data flow from a device and window-form application to GIS, the pathways to data exchange between platforms to platforms, where ArcGIS is the most used software. Furthermore, the study highlighted the lack of interoperability between heterogeneous systems as the crux impediment to adopting GIS in the built environment.Originality/valueThe research provides a deep insight into possible areas where GIS is adopted in the construction industry, identifying areas of extensive and limited application coverage over a decade. Besides, it demystifies possible pathways for future integration opportunities of GIS with other emerging technologies within the construction industry.

Under the background of rapid economic development and the continuous expansion of city size, people’s travel is deeply troubled by the problem of urban traffic congestion. Subway is an effective way to relieve traffic pressure and plays an important role in its use. In the process of building the city subway, the excavation of the underground tunnel is the most critical. However, the excavation of the tunnel will inevitably disturb the nearby soil, change the stratum stress conditions, and make the stress distribution uneven. If the surface settlement is too large, it will not only affect the normal construction of the tunnel but also cause damage to the surrounding buildings (structures), roads, underground pipelines, and so on, resulting in very serious malignant consequences. In this study, Cuobuling Station is taken as a case study. First, the construction status of the subway tunnel in the station is analyzed, and then the monitoring results are analyzed. According to the cross-section settlement law, the numerical simulation and neural network are used to build a model, calculate the numerical simulation results, and carry out a risk assessment of regression model. Finally, combined with the tunnel construction situation of the station, according to the risk assessment results, the concrete measures are put forward to deal with the subway tunnel construction settlement problem.

Railway alignment optimization in earthquake‐prone mountainous (EPM) regions should quantify and trade off construction investments and seismic risks. Unfortunately, slight attention has been previously devoted to this trade‐off. To this end, based on the FEMA‐P58 methodology, a net present value (NPV) model of risk avoidance is presented and solved. In the model, alignment alternatives are first segmented into structural groups with different probabilistic seismic fragility curves, which are then used to generate structural repair cost and repair time curves. Afterward, a probabilistic seismic hazard curve is introduced to estimate the expected annual repair cost and time for computing railway direct and indirect seismic losses. Hence, the railway total annual loss caused by seismic activity can be obtained. Next, a benefit–cost analysis is performed to combine construction cost and seismic loss as the risk‐cost NPV. To optimize this objective function, a particle swarm algorithm is used as the basic approach. For implementing the probabilistic seismic performance analysis, a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is employed as the risk assessment module. Furthermore, due to the computationally intensive nature of MCS, a CPU‐based parallelization is embedded into the algorithm to expedite the search. Finally, the proposed model and method are applied to a representative real‐world railway case in an EPM region. Their effectiveness is discussed and verified in five experiments, including algorithm convergence analysis, alignment solution comparison, seismic risk interpretation, computational efficiency test, and a specific sensitivity analysis.
