Proactive tobacco treatment for individuals with and without a mental health diagnosis: Secondary analysis of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Those with a mental health diagnosis benefitted less from proactive outreach regarding tobacco use. VA primary care patients with mental illness may not need additional outreach because they are connected to cessation resources during medical appointments. This group may also require more intensive cessation interventions targeting self-efficacy to improve cessation rates. Clinicaltrials.gov registration # NCT00608426.

“…The present study adds to the body of evidence indicating that smokers with mental health disorders benefit from proactive outreach (Hammett et al, 2019; Japuntich et al, 2018; Rogers, Fu, et al, 2018), demonstrating that veteran smokers with PTSD utilize cessation treatments at high rates when they are offered and that increasing engagement in evidence-based treatments can boost abstinence rates. Certain components of proactive outreach, including direct outreach by trained cessation counselors to stimulate interest in treatment and the use of personalized quit plans, may be particularly beneficial for smokers with PTSD.…”

However, this hypothesis is debatable because establishing a mechanical ball‐valve system at the sella floor after EETS is difficult.…”
