This article presents the implementation of a reference architecture for cyber-physical systems to support condition-based maintenance of industrial assets. It also focuses on describing the data analysis approach to manage predictive maintenance of clutch-brake assets fleet over the previously defined MANTIS reference architecture. Proposals for both the architecture and data analysis implementation support working on Big Data scenarios, due to the usage of related technologies, such as Hadoop Distributed File System, Kafka or Apache Spark. The techniques are (1) root cause analysis powered by attribute-oriented induction clustering and (2) remaining useful life powered by time series forecasting. The work has been conducted in a real use case within the H2020 European project MANTIS.

The turnouts in railway infrastructure constitute bottlenecks, limiting the capacity of the entire railway network. Due to their design and geometry, these turnouts force speed limits. The need to ensure the proper technical condition of turnouts has prompted ongoing scientific research and the use of modern technological solutions. Until now, there have been no tests for the correct location of the geometric center of a double and outside slip turnout with the related geometric relationships. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to demonstrate the position of the geometric centre of a double slip turnout and the geometric conditions of the curves of circular diverted tracks by measuring the horizontal versines and geometric irregularities of turnouts. The application of this surveying method, with reference to obtuse crossings and arising from geometric dependencies in the double and outside slip turnout, is defined and implemented (also known as a method for checking the correct location of the geometric center of a turnout—Surveying and Monitoring of the Geometric Center of a Double and Outside Slip Turnout (SMDOST)) via the Magnetic-Measuring Square (MMS) and electronic Total Station. This method also recommends measuring the horizontal versines of the diverted tracks. This paper presents the results of field measurements using the SMDOST and MMS methods, which were applied to carry out an analysis and evaluation of the turnout geometry conditions, thereby presenting the irregularities that cause turnout deformations. The validity of the SMDOST method using MMS and Total Station was thus confirmed. The observations from the conducted research indicate that neglecting measurements of the geometry of the turnouts resulted in additional irregularities in their conditions.

The article presents a few issues related to the technical condition of a railway turnout, an important element of the railway network where about 90% of railway accidents occur. In the first part of the article, the results of railway turnout wear are presented. A comparison of normal forces (in wheel–rail contact) in vehicle traffic on straight track without a turnout and normal forces occurring when a rail vehicle passes a turnout is presented. Then, turnout wear processes for selected speeds are presented. In the next part of the paper, the possibilities of using a vision system are presented, which, in combination with tools for image processing analysis, makes it possible to detect wear and distances between the key elements of a railway turnout. The main idea of the proposed online diagnostic system solution is to use the analysis of received images (photos) with the help of a vision system. The basic problem to be solved in the proposed system was to develop algorithms responsible for generating wear areas from high-resolution images. The algorithms created within the work were implemented and tested in the MATLAB software environment. The presented method is an original procedure for diagnosing turnout elements for each time instant. The proposed system is compatible with railway traffic control systems.
