Private information retrieval for coded storage

Abstract: Private information retrieval scheme for coded data storage is considered in this paper. We focus on the case where the size of each data record is large and hence only the download cost (but not the upload cost for transmitting retrieval queries) is of interest. We prove that the tradeoff between storage cost and retrieval/download cost depends on the number of data records in the system. We also propose a fairly general class of linear storage codes and retrieval schemes and derive conditions under which our… Show more

“…Recently, there has been a renewed interest to study the PIR problem from an information-theoretic formulation [5], [7], [8]. Under this setting, the file size is assumed to be arbitrarily large, and hence the upload cost can be ignored compared to the download cost.…”

“…In the classical setting, a user is interested in retrieving a single message (file) out of K messages from N replicated and non-colluding databases, in such a way that no database can know the identity of the user's desired file. The PIR problem has become a vibrant research topic within information theory starting with trailblazing papers [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. In [9], Sun and Jafar introduce the PIR capacity, which is the supremum of the ratio of the number of bits of desired information (L) that can be retrieved privately to the total downloaded information.…”
