Abstract: Willing non-bicycle and public-bicycle commuters had more favourable perception toward public-shared bicycles compared to private cyclists. Hence, public bicycles may be the impetus for those willing to start bicycle commuting, thereby increasing physical activity levels.

“…The key benefits that users perceive of the system are the avoidance of maintenance costs, affordability and not having to worry about theft and vandalism [72], which supports the findings in earlier studies on motivations for users to join BSS. However, the Bicing service cannot offer the same door-to-door flexibility and assurance of availability as owning a private bicycle.…”

Travel purpose The purpose of shared transportation travel most commonly includes commuting (Curto et al 2016; Basch et al 2015; Yang et al 2015; Fishman and Schepers 2016; Martin and Shaheen 2011), recreational (Mateo-Babiano et al 2016; Basch et al 2015), shopping (Vine, Adamou, and Polak 2014), tourist (Zaltz et al 2013), social (Zhang et al 2015), fitness (Romanillos et al 2016), and healthy lifestyle (Castillo-Manzano, Castro-Nuño, and López-Valpuesta 2015).…”

“…Cycling is a human behavior that is a convergence of a myriad of individual (e.g., age, gender, physical abilities, and confidence level), situational (e.g., trip purpose, distance, time, and cost), and environmental (e.g., infrastructure, traffic conditions, and topography) factors [16,17]. Individual sociodemographic features are a major determinant in decisions of which routes to take or whether to ride a bicycle to get to a destination [18,19,20], and psychological factors (such as attitudes and perception) are also important [21,22,23]. Bicyclists generally prefer routes with bicycle infrastructure that can separate and protect them from vehicle traffic [18,20,24,25,26,27,28].…”
