Privacy‐preserving authentication scheme for on‐road on‐demand refilling of pseudonym in VANET

Abstract: Privacy in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET) is fundamental because the user's safety may be threatened by the identity and the real-time spatiotemporal data exchanged on the network. This issue is commonly addressed by the use of certified temporal pseudonyms and their updating strategies to ensure the user's unlinkability and anonymity. IEEE 1609.2 Standard specified the process of certifying pseudonym along with certificates structure. However, the communication procedure between the certifying authority an… Show more

“…This approach authenticates RSUs using MHT and verifies cars using MMPT. Benarous et al [19] provide a novel privacy-preserving approach for pseudonym on-road on-demand replenishment, in which the vehicle authenticates itself anonymously to the local authority subsidiaries of the central trusted authority in order to seek a novel pseudonyms pool. This technique entails a challenge-based authentication process and the creation of an anonymous ticket.…”

“…Furthermore, a mechanism is proposed to provide users with dynamic pseudonyms, named as base pseudonyms and short-time pseudonyms, to achieve users' privacy. In Reference [14], a new privacy-preserving solution for pseudonym on-road on-demand refilling is proposed where the vehicle anonymously authenticates itself to the regional authority subsidiary of the central trusted authority to request a new pseudonym pool. The logical demonstration proved that this privacy-preserving authentication is assured.…”

“…However, the high traffic congestion increases the number of messages transmitted, which increases the overhead of computations and communications from VANET. A refiling framework has been developed for on-demand pseudonyms and certificates by Benarous et al (2020) ; anonymous tickets and challenge-based authentication are the foundation of their scheme. The scheme’s effectiveness against the most popular security parameters is tested using several methods and techniques that have proven its efficiency and robustness, such as the BAN logic, SPAN, and AVISPA instruments.…”
