Privacy concerns in the smart home context

Abstract: With the rapid development of the Internet of Things, intelligent systems are increasingly finding their way into everyday life and into people's homes. With the spread of these technologies, there is a growing concern about what sensitive data is collected and what it is used for. Unfortunately, the role of privacy has remained largely unexplored in the smart home (SH) usage context. This study addresses this gap in literature: to what extend users' concerns for information privacy influence the intended SH u… Show more

“…Studies show that aged participants when given a choice between an automated and manual system, chose manual as it gives the feeling of having control over the system. 42 Systems may also create fear and irritation when a user is unable to control the system or interact with it. 71 Birchley et al suggest that providing improper focus on choices to end users puts burden on individuals.…”

“…In previous studies, TAM was used in its original version as well as in combination with other variables. But an extension of the model to include technology-specific external variables [21,23,26] is recommended to strengthen the predictive and explanatory power [27]. We have done this by including the variables trust and privacy concerns, following the approach of previous studies on trust and technology acceptance (see e.g., [5,21,26] as well as on privacy concerns and technology acceptance (see e.g., [22,26,28] in diverse application areas.…”

“…Diverse privacy concerns have been found to negatively influence the intention to use new technologies across diverse application areas, e.g. smart home [27] and smartwatch [28]. Considering privacy concerns as the perceived risk that the user's personal or financial information could be processed, collected and used by third parties in a manner that is unauthorized, harmful or contrary to the interests of the user, we expect similar effects on the intention to use ICB due to the sensitivity of insurance data which is why we derive the last hypothesis:…”

“…The robustness of TAM, IDT, and TPB have been tested in the SHSs. In addition, many studies were found in the literature that used an enhanced version of these acceptance theories with additional factors, depending on the technology being studied (Alaiad & Zhou, 2017;Bao et al, 2014;Dong et al, 2017;Gross et al, 2020;Guhr et al, 2020;Hojjati & Khodakarami, 2016;Hubert et al, 2019;Kim et al, 2017;Nikou, 2019;Pal et al, 2018;Park et al, 2018Park et al, , 2017Sequeiros et al, 2021;Shuhaiber & Mashal, 2019;Yang et al, 2017). A detailed description of all factors proposed is presented in the following subsections.…”
