“…We then excluded journals that did not feature the word ‘nursing’ in the title ( n = 14) and finally we excluded journals with a dedicated and specialized focus such as forensics, palliative care, ageing/gerontology, research and education ( n = 16) as our aim was to map findings from non‐specialized or generic peer‐reviewed nursing journals. We excluded journals with a forensic focus as the remit of forensic settings is to assess and treat individuals who experience mental health problems and who are involved in the criminal justice system (Health Service Executive, 2023) and differs from the remit of the prison environment which is to detain those who break the law (Behan & Stark, 2023). This resulted in seven ( n = 7) journals being included in the review, whose broad focus was either mental health nursing or adult nursing.…”

“…This has been driven by a rise in the older prison population in the UK, the USA, Japan and other countries (Maschi et al, 2021). This rise reflects a more punitive sentencing climate and an increased focus on public protection, combined with increased longevity, whole-life tariffs and the impacts of prosecutions for historical offences including sexual abuse (Howse, 2003;Garland, 2001;Behan and Stark, 2023). In some countries, the abolition of the death penalty and the shift towards forms of "life without parole" and Whole Life Tariffs have meant that individuals who have been convicted of serious offences, and who remain dangerous, will live out their lives and die in prison.…”
