Workload is the number of tasks and obligations that one has to perform or to complete within a specific period of time. The amount and type of work one does on a daily basis may have an effect on one's health particularly mental health. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of workload on nurses' mental health. Materials & methods:A quantitative descriptive design was employed with purposive sampling to select a sample of participants using a pre-tested questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided in five parts; the first part being the socio-demographic data, the second part was on workload, third part included questions on nursing shortages, the fourth part addressed issues of burnout and the final part addressed issues of mental health of nurses.Results: Out of the 150 questionnaires handed out, 120 were returned by the participants. Ninety-four of the participants were females and 26 were males. The age range of the participants was 24-51years. The results of this study indicate that most nurses in Katutura Hospital are overworked and as a result present with symptoms of mental health classified as depression. Among other factors, staff shortage came out as a major contributing factor for the high levels of workload.

Human resources are a key source of sustainable competitive advantage and are considered as one of the substantial factors for an organization’s success. No organization can survive without its human resources. Understanding employees’ needs, desires, and satisfaction is essential. Organizational managers consider financial and non-financial compensation for employees’ service. There is a need for a practical look at the field of nursing service compensation, especially in the healthcare system. In this study, the factors affecting nursing service compensation in the selected private hospitals in Iran were initially identified and confirmed using the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The three major factors are empowerment components, organizational components, and financial components. Then, the driver factors (causes) and dependent factors (effects) in the nursing service compensation system were investigated and their relationships were determined using the fuzzy DEMATEL technique. Finally, these factors were ranked using the best–worst (BWM) method. The results of BWM indicate that financial components gained the top-ranked, followed by organizational components, and empowerment components.

This study uses the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method to identify critical dimensions of the safety attitudes questionnaire in Taiwan in order to improve the patient safety culture from experts' viewpoints. Teamwork climate, stress recognition, and perceptions of management are three causal dimensions, while safety climate, job satisfaction, and working conditions are receiving dimensions. In practice, improvements on effect-based dimensions might receive little effects when a great amount of efforts have been invested. In contrast, improving a causal dimension not only improves itself but also results in better performance of other dimension(s) directly affected by this particular dimension. Teamwork climate and perceptions of management are found to be the most critical dimensions because they are both causal dimensions and have significant influences on four dimensions apiece. It is worth to note that job satisfaction is the only dimension affected by the other dimensions. In order to effectively enhance the patient safety culture for healthcare organizations, teamwork climate, and perceptions of management should be closely monitored.
