Prioritizing marine invasive alien species in the European Union through horizon scanning

Abstract: 1. The disproportionately low presence of marine species in the list of invasive alien species (IAS) of Union concern of the European Union (EU) Regulation 1143/2014 does not fully acknowledge the threat they pose to the EU marine environment.2. In this study, the first EU-scale Horizon Scanning (HS) focusing on marine alien species was performed, aiming to deliver a ranked list of species that should be of high priority for risk assessment (Article 5 of the EU IAS Regulation).3. Species absent from or with a … Show more

“…It has been repeatedly suggested that one of the most effective strategies to prevent new introductions of invasive alien species (IAS) and, hence, to limit future costs to society and protect biodiversity and ecosystems, is through the management of major (or "priority") pathways and corresponding vectors (Carlton and Ruiz 2005;Hulme 2009;Pyšek and Richardson 2010;Ojaveer et al 2018;Tsiamis et al 2020). Information on the native range of the species and pathways of introduction often accompany checklists of alien species (e.g.…”

“…This called the attention of the local scientific community, that tried to monitor this through a wide list of databases, inventories and horizon scannings (e.g. Tsiamis et al 2015 , Tsiamis et al 2020 , Crocetta et al 2017 , Zenetos et al 2017 ). In recent years, the involvement of citizen scientists also further contributed to early detection and mapping of NIS species (e.g.…”

“…They inform prioritization processes, e.g. Horizon Scanning (Roy et al 2015;Tsiamis et al 2020), the assessment of trends in introduction pathways (Korpinen et al 2019) and the evaluation of existing management practices through the calculation of suitable indicators (Armon and Zenetos 2015;Rabitsch et al 2016).…”
