Prioritizing Climate Change Adaptations in Canadian Arctic Communities

Abstract: Arctic regions are experiencing the most rapid climate change globally and adaptation has been identified as a priority across scales. Anticipatory planning to adapt to the impacts of climate change usually follows a number of steps: assess current and future vulnerability, identify potential adaptations, prioritize options, implement prioritized options, and monitor and evaluate implementation. While most of these steps are well documented, there has been limited examination of the process of adaptation prior… Show more

“…Because of the distributive and long-term nature of climate change impacts, setting priorities is a key to progress on adaptation (Smith 1997;FĂŒssel 2007;Lobell et al 2008). Prioritisation is also useful to mainstream adaptation into existing policy and reduce competing interests (Champalle et al 2015). It is thus argued that an adaptation plan that does not clearly say what is important and what is not (by, e.g.…”

“…Adaptation assessments are needed to identify, evaluate, and prioritize adaptation opportunities, identify barriers that need to be overcome, and examine how adaptation decision-making processes work in specific contexts (Wise et al 2014;Biesbroek et al 2015;Champalle et al 2015). While a variety of approaches and decision support tools have been developed to this end, few have been applied to support adaptation decision-making generally or in a LCLUC context, with an absence of ''usable'' or ''decision-orientated'' science noted to be a major constraint to adaptation (Dilling and Lemos 2011;Ford and King 2015;Taylor and McAllister 2015).…”
