Prioritising prevention: Implementation of IGT Care Call, a telephone based service for people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Whilst an uncontrolled observational study with a small sample size, this pilot suggests IGT Care Call may be effective in promoting positive and sustained lifestyle changes to prevent type 2 diabetes, which warrants further investigation. A telephone method of service delivery was acceptable, convenient and may have improved self confidence in how to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes.

“…Follow-up or maintenance period durations varied by study, ranging from 12 to 48 months after baseline measurements. Some cohorts followed their core interventions with less intensive and/or optional maintenance interventions [21,22,24,27,33], while others included follow-up measurements without postcore maintenance interventions [23,25,34,35]. The relationship between follow-up time and weight change was mixed, with some shorter time frames observing a larger change, and some longer time frames observing a smaller change.…”

“…In Salford, UK we have a lifestyle change programme called Care Call (http://www.srft.nhs.uk/ EasysiteWeb/getresource.axd?AssetID=119162&type= full&servicetype=Inline) [6]. This is a non-face-to-face telephone-based modular intervention programme, which has been proven to benefit people with impaired glucose regulation [7].…”

“…However, some suggested programs offered in primary care may require more evidence [66]. A major concern for such programs would be replicating the results of successful interventions [14, 16, 67, 68] with limited resources which is an important area of research and policy [58, 66, 69, 70]. Diabetes prevention programs have a focus on lifestyle improvements which are “notoriously difficult to achieve and sustain,” especially those involving weight loss and exercise [70] (p.7).…”
