Priorities for protected area research

Abstract: A hundred research priorities of critical importance to protected area management were identified by a targeted survey of conservation professionals; half researchers and half practitioners. Respondents were selected to represent a range of disciplines, every continent except Antarctica and roughly equal numbers of men and women. The results analysed thematically and grouped as potential research topics as by both practitioners and researchers. Priority research gaps reveal a high interest to demonstrate the r… Show more

“…Given the importance in the establishment of the KTP for transboundary conservation, local residents have also had expectations for development opportunities for their respective communities [48,65]. Additionally, there is limited research that pertains to conservation, tourism, and local communities adjacent to PAs in southwestern Botswana [19,32,33,47]. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine local communities' attitudes and support towards the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.…”

“…Although the functions of PNAs were originally limited to aesthetic and protective ones, new roles and functions of protected areas (PAs) have developed over time [ 3 , 4 ]. One recently acknowledged new role has been to see PAs as prominent legal arenas for sustaining active lifestyles, with a wide range of nonmaterial benefits such as improving health and well-being through participation in a variety of health-related physical activities (HEPA) [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
