Drawing from a sample survey of 449 black and white mother-teenage daughter dyads, this study examines patterns, correlates, and consequences of direct verbal communication about sex between mother and daughter. Findings suggest that while mothers and daughters reported frequent discussions of sex-related topics, they differed in terms of how comfortable they felt talking with each other, what roles each played in initiating discussions, and whether they desired more frequent discussions in the future. Higher frequencies of current communication were associated with more responsible patterns of daughters' sexual behavior. T h e authors suggest that future research be directed at determinants of parental involvement in sexual socialization, and at analyses of the underlying processes of parent-child sexual communication.

This article focuses on differences between teenagers who became sexually active in early adolescence (15 or younger) and those who did so in late adolescence (16)(17)(18)(19). It reviews research on adolescent sexual behavior and summarizes findings on factors associated with adolescent coitus. The few findings on the meaning of first coitus are also noted. A study which used a sample of already-pregnant adolescents is presented in detail. While few differences between those who first had coitus during early adolescence and those who had it later were significant, most were in the predicted direction, and none were contrary to the hypotheses. A major significant difference concerned the relationship between sex and love; those who found the two related tended to start their sexual careers later than those who did not. Policy implications of research findings are discussed, especially those relevant to sex education.

A study of 4,976 high-school students in Israel, representative of this age group for the entire country except for 13 percent who attend religious schools, revealed that about one-third of the boys aged 14-15 and almost one-half of those in the 16-17 age category have had sexual intercourse. The respective figures for girls are 6 percent and 16 percent. Age at onset of sexual activity was found to be higher and the level of knowledge about the same as in reports from the Western world. Students of Oriental origin, as well as those considering themselves religious or traditional tended to be less active sexually, more conservative in Throughout the world pregnancy and childbearing are occurring at younger ages, and adolescents are entering the cycle of human reproduction without adequate preparation.1-5 Only a few comprehensive reports on sexual knowledge/attitudes/practice (KAP) in adolescents have been published, and those that have appeared were usually based on relatively small samples, some comprising less than 500 individuals.6-13Israel is geographically and culturally in a mid-position between the developed and the developing countries; in addition its population is of very mixed ethnic origin. The sexual KAP of adolescents in this country should therefore be of special interest.The present study was undertaken under the auspices of the Center of Demography in the Prime Minister's Office. In addition to its general interest, study results were to be used in the construction of a sex education curriculum in Israeli schools.
