Printing Composites with Salt Hydrate Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract: Salt hydrate phase change materials are important in advancing thermal energy storage technologies for the development of renewable energies. At present, their widespread use is limited by undesired undercooling and phase separation, as well as their tendency to corrode container materials. Herein, we report a direct ink writing (DIW) additive manufacturing technique to print noncorrosive salt hydrate composites with thoroughly integrated nucleating agents and thermally conductive additives. First, salt hydrat… Show more

“…Graphene oxide was synthesized using a modified Hummer’s method, , as described in our previous reports. , The process entailed the oxidation of graphite with concentrated H 2 SO 4 and KMnO 4 over a 96-h time frame, with the addition of KMnO 4 in four batches, once every 24 h. The mixture was then diluted, and aqueous H 2 O 2 was added dropwise until the pink color disappeared. The resulting solid graphene oxide (GO) was purified through repeated washing with 2-propanol and centrifugation using a Thermo Scientific Sorvall ST8 and dried under reduced pressure.…”

“…As an alternative strategy, Lak et al demonstrate an additive manufacturing technique to directly print salt hydrate composites with integrated thermally conductive carbon black. 6 A final trend that has received recent attention is the use of an external stimulus to trigger thermal charging or discharging. Li et al demonstrate encapsulated manganese phtalocyanine as a photothermal agent coupled with the PCM ethyl palmitate to directly absorb and store thermal energy.…”

“…These foams were intercalated with paraffin PCMs, resulting in PCM composites that are both shape stable and have moderately higher thermal conductivity. As an alternative strategy, Lak et al demonstrate an additive manufacturing technique to directly print salt hydrate composites with integrated thermally conductive carbon black . A final trend that has received recent attention is the use of an external stimulus to trigger thermal charging or discharging.…”
