Principles of Different X-ray Phase-Contrast Imaging: A Review

Abstract: Numerous advances have been made in X-ray technology in recent years. X-ray imaging plays an important role in the nondestructive exploration of the internal structures of objects. However, the contrast of X-ray absorption images remains low, especially for materials with low atomic numbers, such as biological samples. X-ray phase-contrast images have an intrinsically higher contrast than absorption images. In this review, the principles, milestones, and recent progress of X-ray phase-contrast imaging methods … Show more

“…Phase sensitive X-ray imaging techniques 1 3 such as propagation based imaging 4 , grating interferometry 5 9 , speckle based imaging 10 , 11 , or edge-illumination 12 provide complementary contrasts in addition to absorption contrast. In Talbot-Lau X-ray grating interferometry 8 (GI), for example, an absorption and a phase grating are inserted into an incoherent X-ray beam to generate interference patterns on an imaging detector, from which absorption, differential-phase, and dark-field contrasts are retrieved.…”

“…During the years, different techniques have been proposed for detecting phase-contrast effects: propagation-based approach, diffraction-enhanced imaging, crystal interferometry, grating interferometry, the edge-illumination approach, and speckle-tracking [9,10]. Amongst the popular approaches that have been implemented for clinical work, is the so-called in-line or propagation-based phase-contrast imaging approach that already have clinical implementation for breast cancer imaging [11].…”
