An assurance case contains a structured argument supported by evidence, demonstrating that a system fulfils a certain quality attribute such as safety, cybersecurity or reliability. The traditional way of building assurance cases is, however, not well suited to continuous deployment, and difficult to maintain with a product structure where many variants and frequent new versions must be managed. By integrating the assurance work with product development in continuous assurance cases, which are updated and assessed iteratively, we claim continuous deployment of dependability-critical products is possible to achieve. In this paper we propose a work process combining the use of component-based design, contracts, modular assurance cases, and continuous assessment to enable continuous deployment in the context of product lines.

The result of productive processes is commonly accompanied by a set of justifications which can be, depending on the product, process-related qualities, traceability documents, product-related experiments, tests or expert reports, etc. In critical contexts, it is mandatory to substantiate that a product's development has been carried out appropriately which results in an inflation of the quantity of justification documents. This mass of document and information is difficult to manage and difficult to assess (in terms of soundness). In this paper, we report on the experience gained on two industrial case studies, in which we applied a justification elicitation approach based on justification diagrams and justification pattern diagrams in order to identify necessary and sufficient justification documentation.

The components and the structure of an open system-of-systems (SoS) cannot be completely predicted at the design phase. An open SoS dynamically connects to collectively provide a superordinate functionality, which could not be provided by a single system. In addition, open systems' boundaries, functions, and structures are continuously evolving and perceived differently depending on stakeholders. Preventing them from becoming vague figures requires a particular effort. Therefore, for designers and systems engineers to realize open systems dependability in a company, they need to describe how they recognize the open SoS. This study aims to propose an assurance case (AC) description method that clarifies the objects to reduce misunderstanding of managed objects at the designing phase of an open SoS. We evaluate the method to confirm whether the subjects can describe the managed objects as an open SoS. Additionally, to confirm the utility of the proposed AC description method, we confirm whether the subjects can explain the managed objects as an open SoS using the proposed method. As a result, this study suggested that the proposed AC description method is effective for systems designers and systems engineers to recognize the open SoS.
