Electrical machines are widely used in home appliances, the performance of which is mostly related to the quality function of the electrical machines. What has been used so far in home appliances brought with themselves a wide assortment of advantages and disadvantages. With the aim to overcome the drawbacks of the previously implemented electrical motors in washing machines, a new configuration of flux switching permanent magnet motor (FSPM) with the segmented outer rotor (SOR-FSPM) is proposed benefitting from a direct driven drum. To reduce the cogging torque as well as torque ripple and to improve the total harmonic distortion, cutting the stator in a way to lower overlapping between the rotor and stator pole, inserting notches into the poles of the rotor to modify the air gap between the stator teeth and the rotor segments are proposed. The Taguchi method and sensitivity analysis are further applied to find the best combination set of changes in such a way to smoothen the chart showing reluctance between stator and rotor and fix the zero-point crossing of the flux linkages in different rotor positions. Finally, the proposed SOR-FSPM is prototyped, and experimental results along with the finite element method results are discussed and compared in order to verify the design process. Due to double salient structure, Flux Switching Machines (FSMs) are preferred for brushless AC high speed applications. Permanent Magnet (PM) FSMs (PM-FSMs) are suited applicants where high torque density (Tden) and power density (Pden) are the utmost requisite. However conventional PM-FSMs utilizes excessive rare earth PM volume VPM, higher cogging torque Tcog, high torque ripples (Trip) and comparatively lower (Tden) and Pden due to flux leakage. To overcome the aforesaid demerits, a new high (Tden) Segmented PM Consequent Pole (CP) FSM (SPMCPFSM) with flux bridge and barrier is proposed which successfully reduces VPM by 46.52% and PM cost by 46.48%. Moreover, Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) examines electromagnetic performance due to variation in geometric parameters for global optimum parameters with key metric such as flux linkage (Φpp), flux harmonics (ΦTHD) average torque (Tavg), Tcog, Trip, Tden, average power (Pavg) and Pden. Analysis reveals that MOO improve Φpp by 22.68%, boost Tavg by 11.41%, enhanced Pavg by 4.55% and increased Tden and Pden by 11.41%. Detailed electromagnetic performance comparison with existing state of the art shows that proposed SPMCPFSM offer Tavg maximum up to 88.8%, truncate Trip up to 24.8%, suppress Tcog up to 22.74%, and results 2.45 times Tden and Pden.

Flux switching machines (FSMs) encompass unique features of conventional direct current machine, permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machine and switch reluctance machine. Permanent magnet FSM (PMFSM) is capable of high torque density and applicable for high-speed application, however conventional PMFSM exhibits demerits of high PM volume, high torque ripples and significant stator flux leakage. In this paper, a novel consequent pole E-core stator PMFSM is proposed and compared with conventional topology utilising 2D finite-element analysis (2D-FEA). Finite-element analysis revealed that proposed design enhanced flux modulation effects by introducing flux bridges and flux barriers as a result reduced cogging torque by reducing 46.53% of the total PM volume, reduce torque ripples by reducing PM slot effects and reduce flux leakage utilising flux bridges in the stator. Furthermore, analytical model for flux linkages, cogging torque, mechanical torque, no load and on-load magnetic flux density (MFD) is developed for initial design of conventional and proposed model. 2D analytical methodologies resolve equivalent magnetic circuits for open-circuit flux linkages, Fourier analysis for cogging torque, Laplace equations for MFD and Maxwell stress tensor for mechanical torque. Finally, results obtained from 2D-FEA and analytical methodologies are validated and compared.
