Primum Non Nocere

Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is severe and has not shown any signs of warning up to today. Biotech companies around the world have raced to come up with an acceptable vaccine and recently two mRNA vaccines have received emergency usage authorisation from regulatory bodies in several countries. mRNA vaccines, which consist of a new and revolutionary technology have not been previously tested widely on humans. Medium- and long-term safety data are not available. While many experts seem to sup… Show more

In other words, even emergency public health measures should heed the fundamental premise of primum non nocere , perhaps one of the main precepts of bioethics that all medical students are taught throughout the world [7] , [8] . Although it can be argued that every preventative or therapeutic pharmacological intervention is a two-edged sword if we consider every single potential side effect that could be associated with its use [9] , before consenting to receiving the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, recipients must certainly be informed about what is known and what is not known in terms of immediate- and long-term safety.…”
