Primula sunhangii (Primulaceae): a new species from Hubei, Central China

Abstract: This report provides a description of Primula sunhangii from the Shennongjia Forestry District, Hubei Province in Central China, which is categorized as a new species of the primrose family. Primula sunhangii is morphologically similar to P. involucrata Wall. ex Duby in terms of its simple umbel, efarinose, and prolonged bracts. However, P. sunhangii is distinguished by its glabrous sepal, short petiole (compare with blade) and cylindrical calyx and capsule. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear and… Show more

“…This genus contains ca 500 species (Hu and Kelso 1996, Richards 2002), of which 92% have distylous populations and only 45 species have monomorphic populations (Mast et al 2006). During the last decade, although more than a dozen new species of Primula were reported (Hu and Hao 2011, Wu et al 2013, 2019, Xu et al 2014a, b, 2015a, b, 2016a, b, c, 2017a, b, 2019, Yang et al 2017, Ju et al 2018, Yuan et al 2018, Sun et al 2020), there were only three homostylous species, i.e. P. gracilituba C.M.…”

“…The Chinese Primula species have been divided into 24 sections based on morphological characters (Hu 1990, Hu and Kelso 1996). In recent years, as more and more botanical investigations have been conducted, new species of Primula have continuously been found and published from China (Gong and Fang 2003, Li and Hu 2009, Hu and Hao 2011, Wu et al 2013, Xu et al 2014, Yu et al 2015, He et al 2017, Yang et al 2017, Sun et al 2020).…”

“…Due to the many floristic surveys dedicated to the flora of Hubei, a centre of Metasequoia Flora ( Chen et al 2018 ), many new species have been recently described from Hubei Province and the adjacent area ( Lin et al 2019 ; Zhang et al 2019 ; Chen et al 2020 ; Lv et al 2020 ; Sun et al 2020 ; Liu et al 2021 ; Zhang et al 2021 ). When conducting plant surveys in Houhe, we collected some interesting plants of Youngia from a cave in Wufeng County, Hubei (Fig.…”
