Priming and bonding metal, ceramic and polycarbonate brackets

Abstract: Objective: To investigate if primers can be used to modify bonding characteristics of orthodontic brackets. Materials and methods: Stainless steel, zirconia-alumina ceramic and polycarbonate brackets were bonded to enamel with and without universal and bracket material specific primers on the bracket base. Orthodontic adhesive cement (Transbond TM XT) was used for bonding. The primers in each group (n ¼ 10) were silane based (RelyX TM Ceramic Primer) and universal primer (Monobond Plus) for ceramic and metal b… Show more

“…In contrast to the previous literature describing a higher bond strength of ceramic brackets, no statistical differences were found in the failure rates of ceramic brackets compared to stainless-steel brackets in this study (Jospeh and Rossouw, 1990; Kilponen et al, 2019; Odegaard, 1988; Uysal et al, 2010). In addition, no statistically significant difference in failure rate was found between brackets and molar bands.…”

“…Kilponen et al. 31 used silane primer on not only CBs but also MBs, although this primer was designed to enhance bond strength of the ceramic. 32 In these studies, PBP and silane primer were used for the purpose other than the original ones.…”

“…In the field of fixed orthodontics, brackets are used very often during the treatment. These appliances are mostly made of metal alloys, polycarbonate, ceramic, zirconia [1,2], different kind of wires, and various bonding materials. Although the materials from which the brackets were made have significantly evolved, the metallic ones are still widely used due to their mechanical and chemical properties [3].…”
