The red brocket deer (Mazama temama) is one of the least studied species of deer in Latin America. In México, little information is available on this species in mountainous regions, particularly in mountain cloud forests (MCF) in the state of Hidalgo. Since red brocket deer and MCF are threatened, mainly by anthropogenic activities, it is essential to carry out monitoring to corroborate the presence of this species in the MCF of Hidalgo. Here we report new records of this species in MCF of northeastern Hidalgo, in a forest management unit. The study was carried out in the 1302 Zacualtipán-Molango Forest Management Unit (UMAFOR) as part of the Strengthening of Social Organizations in the Forestry Sector project of the 2016 National Forestry Program. Monthly walks were carried out in different locations (sites) within the area between January 2016 and February 2019. The presence of red brocket deer was inferred from evidence of scats, tracks, direct sightings, and photographic records. For the latter, trap cameras were placed at sites identified as likely wildlife passes. We obtained 20 records (1 track, 2 scats, 1 sighting, 16 photographs) of red brocket deer. The sighting consisted of an adult individual being chased by seemingly feral dogs. These records provide up-to-date information on the distribution of red brocket deer in MCF in northeastern Hidalgo. To note, records were obtained in an area subjected to forest use under sustained anthropogenic impact. However, owners dedicate their premises to conservation, specifically those including MCF. Since red brocket deer thrives in conserved forests, the records reported here suggest positive effects of forest management on this UMAFOR. Biological monitoring in the area should be continued and extended, also covering areas subject to forest exploitation, as feral dogs may undermine red brocket deer populations. Finally, we recommend the development of research projects in the area, to contribute to management plans aiming to preserve red brocket deer populations.

“…En México, el venado temazate rojo (Mazama temama Kerr 1972, Artiodactyla: Cervidae) es un cérvido que desempeña un papel ecológico en los diferentes hábitats donde se distribuye, ya que es un herbívoro cuya alimentación interviene en la dinámica de la vegetación, principalmente en el ciclo de crecimiento y rebrote de las plantas, y en la dispersión de semillas (Gallina y Mandujano 2009). Esta especie se distribuye en la región neotropical del Continente Americano y en México, su distribución abarca desde el suroriente de Tamaulipas, hasta la península de Yucatán y el sur de Chiapas, el oriente de San Luis Potosí, Querétaro y Puebla, los estados de Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Campeche, Quintana Roo y Yucatán, donde su presencia se ha reportado en diferentes tipos de hábitats (Pérez-Solano et al 2012, Villareal 2013. Background. The red temazate deer (Mazama temama, Artiodactyla: Cervidae) is a deer with ecological, cultural and economic importance, but its density and habitat characteristics in National Parks are unknown. Objective. To estimate the track index as an indirect measure of density and describe the vegetation characteristics of the habitat of M. temama in the town of Zapoapan, Parque Nacional Cañón del Río (PNCRB), Veracruz, Mexico. Methodology. During January to October 2021, eight transects were established to record tracks, phototraps were installed to determine their presence, and Canfield lines were used to describe the vegetation in areas with the presence of the species. Results. Twenty-three tracks of M. temama were recorded: nine tracks (39%), six excreta (26%), three foraging tracks (13%), three stalls (13%) and two photocaptures (8%), equivalent to an index tracks of 0.57 individuals/ha or 2.2 ha/individual, low density compared to other reports of the species. The habitat presented a richness of 19 species of plants, the shrubs being more abundant (36%) than the herbaceous and arboreal (represented by 32% each); the tree layer was dominant in terms of height and diameter. Implications. These results suggest that the habitat does not have sufficient diversity of resources to maintain a dense population of M. temama. Conclusion. The population density of M. temama in the PNCRB was low associated with a restricted carrying capacity in the study area, so actions must be taken towards the conservation and sustainable use of the population of this species.
