Abstract:The neocortex is the brain structure that is characteristic of all mammals. Primates in particular have a distinct neocortex, which is attributed to their high cognitive performances. However, there are significant differences in the morphology of the neocortex between different primate species. Here, we present an overview of primate neocortex development and the functional analysis of genes regulating the activity of cortical progenitor cells, which primarily underlie neocortex morphology.
