“…The significant feature of these results is that after minor procedures (light ether anaesthesia, minor operative manipulations) presumed to be associated with an antidiuretic stimulus (Ginsburg & Brown, 1956) rapid reductions occurred in papillary urea and calculated osmolal concentrations. It would be expected, therefore, that owing to the reduction in the medullary osmotic force, the ability to concentrate urine would be impaired despite high water permeability of the collecting duct since it has been demonstrated previously that the urinary response to ADH depends on the medullary osmolality during various circumstances (Selkurt, 1969; Atherton, Evans, Green & Thomas, 1971;Gagnon, Grove & Flamenbaum, 1974 Raisz, Au & Scheer, 1959;surgery, Gullick & Raisz, 1960; increased renal arterial pressure, Selkurt, Womack & Daly, 1965;haemorrhagic shock, Selkurt, 1969). Reduced nephron permeability to water seems to be excluded in these experiments since reduced urinary osmolality was observed during conditions in which endogenous ADH secretion might be expected to have increased or where exogenous ADH was administered.…”
