“…Similarly, all-polyethylene cemented cups (Havelin et al 2000, Raber et al 2001, Malchau et al 2002, Sanchez-Sotelo et al 2002, Williams et al 2002, Callaghan et al 2004, Della Valle et al 2004, Buckwalter et al 2006) served as the reference group on the acetabular side, and cemented total hip replacements (Havelin et al 2000, Malchau et al 2002, Williams et al 2002, Issack et al 2003, Callaghan et al 2004, Della Valle et al 2004, Buckwalter et al 2006) served as the reference group in analyses of total hip replacements. When the effects of age and sex on implant survival were analyzed with the Cox model, adjustment was also made for implant groups (Furnes et al 2001).…”

“…Results obtained from the Scandinavian arthroplasty registries (Havelin et al 2000, Puolakka et al 2001a, Malchau et al 2002) on a nation-by-nation basis and studies from single centers worldwide (Berry et al 2002, Wroblewski et al 2002, Della Valle et al 2004, Buckwalter et al 2006, Morshed et al 2007) have indicated that cemented total hip replacement is the treatment of choice for severe osteoarthritis in elderly patients. However, in a recent study based on data obtained from the Finnish Arthroplasty Register, cementless implants were found to have similar long-term survival rates as cemented implants in patients aged 55 years or more (Mäkelä et al 2008a).…”

“…Patient-specific surface models play important roles in planning and supporting various computer-assisted surgical procedures. The present technique requires only one AP pelvic x-ray radiograph, which is part of the standard diagnos-tics and treatment loop in clinical routine, 23,24 to derive a scaled, patient-specific surface model of the pelvis, which has a clear advantage over existing methods. The accuracies and the robustness that we have achieved on reconstructing surface models of 14 pelvises demonstrate great promise of our technique to be applicable in clinical settings.…”

“…The only information that we can assume to know about the radiograph is the image scale ͑mm/pixel͒ and the distance from the focal point to the imaging plane or to the film ͑we call this distance the focal-point-to-film distance͒. As long as the radiograph is acquired in a standardized way, which is performed in clinical routine, 23 both parameters can be directly retrieved from the DICOM image of the x-ray radiograph or can be estimated by performing one-time calibration. 24 Furthermore, when only a single image is used, it is well-known that the depth information and the scaling factor are correlated with each other.…”
