Primary Teachers’ Reflections on Inquiry- and Context-Based Science Education

Abstract: Inquiry-and context-based teaching strategies have been proven to stimulate and motivate students' interests in learning science. In this study, 12 teachers reflected on these strategies after using them in primary schools. The teachers participated in a continuous professional development (CPD) programme. During the programme, they were also introduced to a teaching model from a European project, where inquiry-and context-based education (IC-BaSE) strategies were fused. The research question related to teache… Show more

“…A complicating factor when developing context-based problems is that the notion of context is sometimes referred to in different ways. In some studies, the contextual setting is discussed in terms of 'modules' (e.g., Graeber and Lindner 2008;Walan and McEwen 2017) while others use the notion of 'themes' (e.g., Christensson and Sjöström 2014;Nentwig et al 2007), and the definition of the different aspects has not always been explicit. Since context often is broadly defined, van Oers (1998) has argued that it should be regarded as a general theoretical concept, stating that 'context is seen here not merely as a synonym for a concrete external situation, but it can assume the character of a mental framework as well' (van Oers 1998, 474).…”

“…It has been stated that the reliability coefficient accepted in the literature is 0.70 and above (Mc Millan & Schumacher, 2010). Since both scales used in the study were above this specified limit, it was concluded that these scales were appropriate to be used in the study.…”
