Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach: A case report

Abstract: Pure squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the stomach is rare and resembles SCC arising elsewhere in the body. The pathogenesis of SCC remains unclear and controversial. At present, <100 cases of primary SCC of the stomach have been reported. The current study presents a case of SCC of the stomach in a 61-year-old male. Total gastrectomy was performed and a 7.0×6.7×4.5-cm tumor with a superiorly located ulcer was identified in the cardia. Upon histological examination, a moderately-differentiated SCC was observed.… Show more

“…[6] The mean age of the patients was 59.7 years old in the study by Hwang et al [7] and 64.4 years old in the study by Tokuhara et al, [15] which is obviously younger than our mean age of 69.6 years in the SCC subgroup. Moreover, gastric adenocarcinoma patients have similar mean age of 69.0 years old in the current study.…”

“…6,7,30 In most of the cases, the disease is at an advanced stage at diagnosis, and hence, prognosis is poorer compared with other types of cancers of stomach 31 ; however, Altshuler and Shada 13 disagreed. The overall survival rate of the patient is from 7 months to 8 years.…”

“…Various pathological mechanisms have been proposed for this entity: heterotopic squamous epithelium, squamous metaplasia, multipotent stem cells which differentiate into cells of any type, overgrowth of the squamous component in a primary adenocarcinoma, and local extension or metastasis of esophageal SCC. 4 Only 56 cases of primary SCC of the stomach have been reported in Japan with a median age of 64.7± 1.7 years (29-81 years) and a male predominance. The upper third of the stomach was most common tumor location (57.1%), followed by the lower Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Stomach Sharma et al…”

“…Tumor diameter was 2.1 to 13 cm (mean, 6.6 ± 0.3 cm). 4 There is no particular management strategy and prognosis is difficult to predict. Surgical resection (R0 = no residual tumor) remains the mainstay of the treatment.…”
