Primary Spinal Cord Melanoma

Abstract: J Korean Neurosurg Soc 48 : [157][158][159][160][161] 2010 Primary central nervous system (CNS) melanoma is a rare condition that accounts for only 1% of all melanomas. A 34-year-old Korean female presented with a two-month history of progressive weakness in both legs. Spinal magnetic resonance image (MRI) revealed a spinal cord tumor at the level of T4, which was hyperintense on T1-weighted imaging and hypointense on T2-weighted imaging. The intradural and extramedullary tumor was completely resected and d… Show more

“…Previous report demonstrated the classification of spinal melanoma according to the shape and differentiation status of the cells, and indicated a favorable outcome of pure spindle cell type spinal melanoma. 4) However, our case had an obviously different histological subtype (may be mixed type). Therefore, further investigation is necessary to conclude whether the histological subtype indicates the prognosis.…”

“…5,8),13) A previous report stated that the presence of the blood brain barrier in the spinal cord prevents hematogenous spread and hampers the process of metastasis. 4) Considering the slow progression primary spinal malignant melanoma, it is critical to establish a precise diagnosis, because patients should undergo tumor removal to slow down the onset of neurological deficits, even in the case of central nervous system dissemination. MRI is the method of choice for the diagnosis of spinal tumors, including spinal malignant melanoma.…”

“…8,11 Signs and symptoms of this tumor were nonspecific and dependent on location. 12 However, literature concerning the symptomatic bilateral papilledema induced by increased intracranial pressure 13 or the presence of subarachnoid hemorrhage-like symptoms have been reported, and thus clinicians should be aware of these rare presentations. 14 PSM of extramedullary origin show typical changes on MRI.…”

“…These cells are found underneath the brain and the brainstem, inside the ventricles, at the optic chiasm, in the grooves of the various lobes, in the substantia nigra and in the choroid16). Primary spinal cord melanoma is rare, but has been reported previously 9).…”
