Primary Signet Ring Cell Mucinous Ovarian Carcinoma: A Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract: A 24-year-old female patient presented with an extremely rare primary signet cell carcinoma of the right ovary 1 year after surgery for a mucinous borderline tumour of the left ovary. Relaparotomy was carried out with right adnexectomy, appendectomy and partial omentectomy. Surgery was followed by 6 courses of paclitaxel/carboplatinum chemotherapy. “…Signet-ring-cell is a malignant histological cell type which is predominantly seen in carcinomas. Signet ring cells have frequently been reported in association with carcinoma of stomach [1] , but signet ring cells have also been reported in carcinomas of other tissues including the prostate [2] , bladder, gallbladder [3] , breast, colon [4] , ovarian stroma [5,6] , eyelid [7,8] . There have also been occasional reports of metastatic signet ring cell carcinoma to the testis, spermatic cord and scrotum.…”

“…In veterinary medicine, signet-ring cell carcinomas most frequently arise from the stomach in dogs (Sugihara et al 1991;Carrasco et al 2011). Signet-ring carcinomas arising from the ovary have not been reported in veterinary medicine but have been reported rarely in human medicine (El-Safadi et al 2010). …”

“…Primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the ovary is extremely rare with only a few cases reported in human medicine (McCluggage & Young 2008;El-Safadi et al 2010;Leen & Singh 2012). Several reports in older literature have previously described a primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the ovary (Krukenberg tumor) in humans.…”
