“…The cholangiographic findings of bile duct wall irregularities, diverticula, and nodules are well known [1 6], and these changes may contribute to the thickening of the duct wall evident on CT [5]. Histopathologic examination reveals nonspecific, chronic inflammatory change and fibrosis within the walls of the bile duct [14,17,18].…”

“…The diagnosis is difficult to make and there is no known effective therapy (8). Definitive diagnostic criteria include the presence of progressive obstructive jaundice, generalized thickening and sclerosis of the bile ducts, absence of gall stones or previous biliary surgery, and exclusion of sclerosing cholangiocarcinoma by laparotomy or adequate followup (9)(10). In this case, neither laparotomy nor autopsy was performed, but a survival of 4 years would be very unusual with cholangiocarcinoma.…”

“…Sclerosing cholangitis has been described in association with chronic ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis, and fibrosing processes elsewhere such as retroperitoneal fibrosis, mediastinal fibrosis, Riedel's struma, and retrorbital tumors (10)(11)(12)(13). None of these conditions were present in this case until 1 month before death, when nonspecific proctitis developed possibly representing late appearing ulcerative proctitis.…”
