Primary pulmonary spindle cell tumour (haemangiopericytoma) in a dog

Abstract: Haemangiopericytoma is a soft tissue sarcoma believed to originate from pericytes. These tumours are commonly located on the skin and subcutaneous tissue of dogs and are most commonly found on the limbs. To the authors' knowledge, primary lung haemangiopericytomas have not been previously described in dogs. This case report describes the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of a primary haemangiopericytoma of the lung in a 10-year-old male, neutered, Siberian husky dog. Staging of the tumour was performed using… Show more

“…Heterogeneous enhancement would not be a valid specific criterion for this disease, as 64% of canine primary lung tumors also have heterogeneous contrast uptake after contrast medium injection . In addition, peripheral enhancement with absence of central contrast medium uptake does not preclude a neoplastic origin: a primary pulmonary haemangiopericytoma (spindle cell tumor) with only peripheral enhancement in a pseudocapsule has been described in a dog . These various findings in dogs differ from people, with absence of significant lung nodule enhancement (≤15 HU) on CT being strongly predictive of a benign lesion in human medicine .…”

“…In human medicine, there are sporadic case reports of mediastinal sarcomas, with one case series of 16 cases of mediastinal sarcomas in which undifferentiated sarcomas were associated with a higher rate of tumour progression and poorer survival times 18 . In the veterinary literature, reported survival times for thoracic STS range from 2 weeks to not reached 11,12 …”

“…Visceral STS are infrequently reported in the veterinary literature. There are sporadic case reports of primary STS originating within the thoracic cavity 10–12 . Traditionally, wide surgical excision has been the recommended surgical dose for visceral STS.…”
