Primary Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Diagnosed by Using Endoscopic Ultrasound with Fine Needle Aspiration

Abstract: There is paucity in the literature on the use of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for evaluating the thyroid gland. We report the first case of primary papillary thyroid cancer diagnosed by using EUS and fine needle aspiration (FNA). A 66-year-old man underwent EUS for the evaluation of mediastinal lymphadenopathy. FNA of the lymph nodes showed benign findings. A hypoechoic mass was noted in the right lobe of the thyroid gland. Therefore, FNA was performed. The cytological results were consistent with primary papil… Show more

“…Thyroid lesions found during routine EUS have been reported in case reports. [ 2 ] In addition, EUS-guided FNA of thyroid lesions was described in three separate case reports. [ 2 3 4 ] FNA in these case reports detected benign goiter,[ 3 ] Hurtle cell neoplasm,[ 4 ] and primary papillary thyroid cancer.…”

“…In a retrospective case series involving nine cases, EUS was used in a diagnosis of a multilocular thyroid cyst. EUS has also been used for diagnosis of primary papillary thyroid carcinoma, or esophageal evaluation of primary thyroid tumors . However, to the authors’ knowledge, the present case is the first to describe parasitic thyroid tissue.…”

“…[9101112] Little information is available regarding the use of EUS and EUS-FNA aspiration cytology (EUS-FNAC) to stage tumors in the head and neck region. [131415] No specific probe has been developed for EUS evaluation of the head and neck region. [1617] EUS with the help of a modified probe has shown results superior to CT and MRI in the assessment of laryngeal cancer.…”
