Primary Outcomes for Resuscitation Science Studies

Abstract: Background and Purpose The guidelines presented in this consensus statement are intended to serve researchers, clinicians, reviewers, and regulators in the selection of the most appropriate primary outcome for a clinical trial of cardiac arrest therapies. The American Heart Association guidelines for the treatment of cardiac arrest depend on high-quality clinical trials, which depend on the selection of a meaningful primary outcome. Because this selection process has been the subject of much controversy, a con… Show more

“…However, recent guidelines recommended 3 months for correct patient follow-up after CA, and our study fulfilled this criteria defined a priori. 41 In both groups, early cooling with cold fluid infusions was rarely used in our study. However, 2 randomized, controlled trials failed to demonstrate that such cooling could influence prognosis.…”

“…6 This document also notes that no single definition of neurologic outcome is available and that outcome assessment is a multimodal approach. 6 Return to work with maintenance of salary indicates a capability to continue to function in society in the same manner as before an event but is sparsely studied after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.…”

“…6 This document also notes that no single definition of neurologic outcome is available and that outcome assessment is a multimodal approach. 6 Return to work with maintenance of salary indicates a capability to continue to function in society in the same manner as before an event but is sparsely studied after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] In a study of 133 comatose out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors who were treated with therapeutic hypothermia, 74% of patients with favorable discharge cerebral performance category scores had returned to work at 1-year follow-up.…”

“…9,10 Although previous studies have identified sites with a higher risk of SCAs, [18][19][20][21][22] especially raising the association with train stations and airports, the reliability and determinants of such high-risk places have been only partially explored. In this study, we collected data on SCA locations in Paris.…”
