Primary Myxoid Leiomyoma of the Liver

Abstract: Herein, we report a case of primary myxoid leiomyoma of the liver. A 60-year-old woman complained of upper abdominal fullness. Computed tomography showed a solid tumor (8 cm) in the liver. The patient underwent right hepatectomy and histological findings from the resected specimen revealed scattered bland spindle cells in a background of exuberant myxoid material. The tumor cells were immunoreactive for smooth muscle actin and desmin. No other lesions were found elsewhere in the body. Thus, the tumor was diagn… Show more

“…The main differential diagnoses encompass myxoma and mesenchymal hamartoma, the latter composed of loose connective tissue and epithelial bile duct or ductile-like in different proportions, with myxoid or collagenous stroma and arranged in a concentric way around the ducts [2]. Extensive tumor sampling is required in order to document the morphological spectra needed for the final diagnosis.…”

“…Primary liver cancer is the sixth most prevalent cancer worldwide, accounting for 5.7% of the overall incidence of cancer [1]. In 2018, the American Cancer Society estimated that liver and intrahepatic bile duct neoplasia corresponded to 4% of all new cases of cancer in men, with an estimated death rate of 6% among men and 3% among women [2, 3].…”

“…The differential diagnosis comprises few other hepatic mesenchymal tumors that have a myxoid tissue component, including primary hepatic myxoid leiomyosarcoma (Tsiatis et al 2008), primary myxoid leiomyoma (Choi et al 2014), and primary myxoid liposarcoma (Binesh et al 2012). Right atrial metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma can mimic atrial myxoma (Chua et al 1986;Anwar et al 2010).…”
