Primary meningococcal arthritis of sacroiliac joint: A rare case report

Abstract: Infection of the sacroiliac joint is a rare entity. Clinical signs and symptoms are usually nonspecific and result in delayed diagnosis. We report a rare case of primary meningococcal arthritis of right sacroiliac joint in an 11-year-old male child. Synovial fluid aspirated from the joint space showed Gram-negative diplococci which were confirmed as Neisseria meningitidis by culture and necessary biochemical tests followed by serogrouping by using polyvalent antisera. He was treated successfully with antibioti… Show more

“…Serogroup data were documented in five case reports [24,25,33,48,52] among which serogroup A, A-D (specific serogroup was not reported in the study) (n = 2) [24,48] and the less common serogroups B and Y (n = 3) [25,33,52] were reported.…”

“…Only 34 cases of primary meningococcal arthritis were reported in the literature from 1980 to 2002 [12] and only sporadically thereafter. For the past 5 years, we found 8 reports of primary meningococcal arthritis in the shoulder, pelvis, sacrolic joint, knee, elbow, ankle, and polyarticular joints, and 2 cases, among those, were sterile or allergic [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. To our knowledge, this is the first report of primary meningococcal arthritis in Japan.…”
