“…There was no evidence of metastatic lesions and he was alive 6 months after surgery. The second case, published by Carstens et al 6 in 1986 and Wright et al 7 in 1988, describes biliary tract obstruction in a 30-year-old man due to a primary malignant melanoma. A Whipple resection was performed and the primary origin of the tumor was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.…”

“…A review of the published literature searched in PubMed, using a series of search strings ('biliary' OR 'bile duct' AND 'primary' AND 'melanoma') with no date limit, revealed that only 15 cases, including the present case, have been reported to date (summarised in Table 1). The predominant clinical symptom was found to be jaundice, with the next most commonly reported symptoms being abdominal pain and dark urine.…”

“…Primary malignant melanoma of the biliary tract has been detected in all parts of the extrahepatic duct system, i.e., involving the bifurcation (confluens) of the large duct (Washburn et al 1995;Gonzalez et al 2001), hepatic and common bile ducts combined (Deugnier et al 1991), the common bile duct (Duval 1908;Shepherd 1908;Zaide 1963;Breatnach et al 1985;Carstens et al 1986;Wright and Brewer 1988;Cohen et al 1990;Zhang et al 1991;Gates et al 1996;Wagner et al 2000;Medina et al 2003;Bejarano Gonzalez et al 2005), and the ampulla of Vater (Duval 1908;Washburn et al 1995;Fléchon et al 2002). Melanoma of the common bile duct may be combined with melanoma in the gallbladder (Zhang et al 1991;Medina et al 2003).…”
