Primary lymphoma of the breast.Ultrastructural study of two cases

Abstract: Two cases of primary non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of the breast were studied with light and electron microscopy. By light microscopy, according to Rappaport's classification, one was a poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma, the other a diffuse histiocytic lymphoma. However, the ultrastructural features of the latter were more consistent with transformed lymphocytes. The differential diagnosis with medullary and poorly differentiated carcinomas of the breast is discussed. The first case had rapid dissemination … Show more

“…A rare diagnosis, PBL accounts for less than 1% of breast malignancies and less than 2% of extranodal nonHodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) (2,(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). PBL is more aggressive and has a worse prognosis in comparison to that of extranodal NHL of alternate sites, such as in the gastrointestinal tract (9)(10)(11)(12). SBL (3,7,(18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23).…”

“…To date, the role of surgery in the management of PBL is still a matter of debate. Because fineneedle aspiration cytology is the method of choice for the diagnosis of breast tumor, the role of surgery has become less important than in the past, and some authors feel that surgical procedures are probably not indicated any more [32]. However, all our patients underwent a surgical approach always including ipsilateral axillary dissection, although a diagnosis of breast carcinoma had been previously excluded.…”

“…Primary breast lymphoma accounts for between 0.04 % and 0.5 % of all malignant breast tumors and 2.2 % of all extranodal lymphomas [1] and comprises between 0.04 % and 0.53 % of all mammary malignancies [2,4,6,9,10,11,12].…”
