Primary leiomyosarcoma of the seminal vesicle: Case report and review of the literature

Abstract: BackgroundPrimary leiomyosarcoma of the seminal vesicle is exceedingly rare.Case PresentationWe report a case of a 59-year-old man with tumour detected by rectal symptoms and ultrasonography. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging suggested an origin in the right seminal vesicle. Transperineal biopsy of the tumour revealed leiomyosarcoma. A radical vesiculo-prostactectomy with bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy was performed. Pathological examination showed a grade 2 leiomyosarcoma of the seminal ves… Show more

“…The localization in the genitourinary tract of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is a very rare condition (less than 5% of these neoplasms) (7), among these a localization at the level of the seminal vesicles is even more rare (7). To our knowledge, only few cases have been reported to date in the literature but no one with large dimension as in our case (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7).…”

“…The localization in the genitourinary tract of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is a very rare condition (less than 5% of these neoplasms) (7), among these a localization at the level of the seminal vesicles is even more rare (7). To our knowledge, only few cases have been reported to date in the literature but no one with large dimension as in our case (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). The diagnosis of the real anatomical origin of this type of neoplasia is made difficult by invasive and compressive phenomena on adjacent organs, so for a correct diagnosis the use of CT-scan and MRI are fundamental.…”

“…The diagnosis and staging of seminal vesicle tumors requires radiological imaging; however, the tumors tend to invade neighbouring structures in the retrovesical space, causing difficulties in determining the organ of origin (8). Pelvic CT and MRI enable localisation of the tumor in the seminal vesicle, and a better appreciation of the locoregional extension prior to surgery (9).…”
