Primary intratracheal neurilemmoma in a 10-year-old girl: A case report

Abstract: BACKGROUND Tracheal tumors are relatively rare in adults and uncommon in children. Tracheal neurilemmoma is a rare condition in adults that usually affects middle-aged people, but it can also occur in children. Because the clinical presentation is nonspecific and insidious, diagnosis is often delayed. The most common symptoms in these patients are stridor or wheezing (especially positional) and cough. A few patients are misdiagnosed and mistakenly treated for asthma. CASE SUMMARY … Show more

“…Pathologically, MGAs consist of mucus-secreting components of tracheobronchial seromucinous glands, typically presenting as an endobronchial, multicystic, well-circumscribed tumor (10). The nonspecific nature of signs and symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis, with approximately half of the patients initially misdiagnosed with asthma, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment (11).…”

“…Schwannoma arises from the peripheral nerve sheath; it is less common than neurofibroma [5]. Between 2015 and 2022, 10 cases of primary tracheal schwannoma were reported in English-language literature [3,4,[6][7][8][9]. It is a benign tumor that is more commonly seen in the distal one-third of the trachea, followed by the upper one-third and then the middle one-third of the trachea [2].…”

“…Although our department has rich experience in removing transbronchial tracheal tumors ( 23 , 24 ), there is a substantial risk of intraoperative hemorrhage dealing with the tracheal LCH. We confront the following challenges: ( 1 ) the large size of the tumor and the rich blood supply did not allow the resection with biopsy forceps; ( 2 ) the lesion was attached to the trachea wall, and the resection with laser or cryotherapy may be associated with a high risk of perforation [6].…”
