Primary Intraosseous Meningiomas

Abstract: CT better detected both the bony reaction and the intraosseous extension of the tumour. The dural changes were not specific of tumoural involvement. The differential diagnosis comprises: fibrous dysplasia, osteoma, blastic metastasis and mainly meningioma en plaque (MEP). Comparing our findings with other series, we noticed that in some cases the term MEP was used for similar cases. As the name MEP is merely descriptive and both entities share a larger number of similarities than differences, we believe that a… Show more

“…However, osteolytic or mixed (osteoblastic/osteolytic) subtypes of intraosseous meningioma have also been described in the literature [10]. The internal table can also be affected and has an irregular margin [11] (▶ Fig. 2D-F).…”

“…Primary intraosseous meningioma has been hypothesized to arise from arachnoid cell rests caught within extradural tissues during embryologic development (Azar-Kia et al, 1974;Lee et al, 1988;Arana et al, 1996;Lang et al, 2000). These lesions are usually observed near the suture lines (most commonly at the coronal or pterion sutures) (Ito et al, 1992).…”

“…A wide range of differential diagnoses has to be considered in calvarial lesions in children [8]: intraosseous hemangioma, systemic developmental or metabolic diseases, e.g. hyperparathyroidism, Langerhans’ cell histiocytosis and anemias.…”

“…Hyperparathyroidism or multiple myeloma cause a more ‘salt and pepper’ pattern due to multiple lytic defects. A hyperostosing calvarial meningioma can show a hyperostosis or – more often – a mixed pattern [8]. In sarcomatous degeneration of a meningioma, pagetic calvarium or in the case of a superinfection of a benign tumor (e.g.…”
