Primary hydatid cyst of the biceps femoris

Abstract: Echinococciasis is a zoonotic infestation, which generally involves the liver and the lungs. Primary muscle hydatidosis is an uncommon finding. The authors report a case of primary hydatid cyst localized in the right long head of the biceps femoris of a 25-year-old woman. A wide excision of the cyst with a safety margin was performed. No recurrence has been detected after a 3-year follow-up period. The authors review the literature and discuss the MRI findings. The diagnosis of muscular hydatid cyst is done us… Show more

“…Echinococcus strains do not present muscular tropism and the muscle is not a favourable environment for larval growth (2,4-8). However, several cases have been reported in upper (1,2,11) and lower proximal muscles (3,4,6-10,12,13). To our knowledge, no reports of multiple HC in the vastus intermedius muscle have been documented.…”

“…Institut de parasitologie et de pathologie tropicale de Strasbourg, centre hospitalo-universitaire de Strasbourg, Strasbourg; 2 H ydatid disease is a cosmopolitan anthropozoonosis more prevalent in livestock-rearing countries (1). Resulting from the larval form of the dog tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, hydatid cysts (HC) are most frequently found in the liver (75%) and lungs (15%) (2). Primary muscular hydatidosis is uncommon even in endemic regions (1% to 4%) (2,3).…”

“…Most of the cases reported quadriceps,[3]5] gluteus,[6] trapezius,[7] psoas,[8] erector spinae,[9] biceps femoris,[3]10] adductor brevis,[11] infraspinatus,[3] biceps brachii,[6]12] and triceps branchii[3] as the muscles of involvement. Muscle hydatidosis involving gastrocnemius muscle in the popliteal fossa is very rare.…”

“…Other localizations rarely reported in literature include the skeleton, spleen, peritoneum, kidney, brain, cardiac muscle and even subcutis. Primary muscular hydatidosis is uncommon even in endemic regions (1% to 4%) [3]. This case report has been presented according to SCARE guideline [4].…”
