Primary hydatid cyst of broad ligament

Abstract: Cystic lesions of the female pelvis are common. Clinically, symptomatic lesions are mostly ovarian in origin and neoplastic in nature. Considerable diagnostic dilemma may be encountered if clinical, radiological, and estimation of serum markers failed to classify the origin and nature of such cysts. One such exceptional case is being described where a 35-year-old female presented with a rapidly growing cystic mass in lower abdomen, clinically suspicious of malignancy. Investigations failed to identify the natu… Show more

“…Involvement of female genital tract is extremely rare, Ovaries are involved in such cases. [4][5][6] Disease is usually secondary to hydatidosis affecting abdominal organs, with the pelvis being affected due to spillage during primary surgery. 7 One such exceptional case of primary broad ligament hydatid cyst is being described hereby as the condition is rare and clinically difficult to identify.…”

“…Due to their large size, they can cause prolonged and obstructed labour requiring caesarean section [26]. Primary hydatid cyst of the broad ligament is extremely rare and may be misdiagnosed as pedunculated fibroid or a paraovarian cyst [27]. In one study of echinococcosis in an endemic region, the incidence of broad ligament echinococcosis was 0.37% among all cases of hydatid cyst [28].…”

“…This delay not only worsens the patient's condition but also heightens the risk of intraoperative complications during surgical interventions. 4 The socioeconomic burden in India is substantial, with prolonged hospitalizations, expensive diagnostic procedures, and extensive surgeries imposing significant financial strains, especially in resourcelimited settings. Heightened awareness among healthcare professionals, targeted public health interventions focusing on prevention, and improved access to diagnostic and therapeutic facilities in endemic regions are crucial.…”
