Primary choroidal and cutaneous melanomas, bilateral choroidal melanomas, and familial occurrence of melanomas.

Abstract: SUMMARYThe medical history of a patient with a familial atypical multiple mole melanoma syndrome revealed a combination of rare findings: occurrence of a melanoma in both eyes, development of 3 separate skin melanomas, and occurrence of other malignancies in the family. Another patient developed a choroidal and a skin melanoma, but there were no known malignancies in the family. A third patient with a choroidal melanoma had a mother with an ethmoidal melanoma.

“…In the Netherlands, a relation has been reported between the occurrence of ocular melanoma and skin melanoma in familial atypical multiple mole syndrome (FAMMM), also called dysplastic nevus syndrome [9,10]. We do not know whether B40 is associated with this syndrome, but such an association is not likely since no linkage between HLA and the inheritance of the FAMMM syndrome has been demonstrated [11].…”

“…Depending on the location and the size of the tumor, reported cases were treated by bilateral beta irradiation (Lommatzch et al 1981), enucleation and plaque brachytherapy (Ascaso et al 1996), enucleation and local resection (Omulecki et al 1994;Migdal & Macfarlane 1984), or bilateral enucleation (Oosterhuis et al 1982;Seregard et al 1988). A patient developed uveal melanoma 3.5 years after enucleation of the fellow eye for the same tumor and was managed by external beam radiotherapy (Eide 1989).…”

“…Only three patients -not having the dysplastic naevus syndrome -have been described [8,10,11]. The third combination of cutaneous and ocular melanoma, a primary cutaneous melanoma causing symptomatic metastasis to the eye, has a low incidence.…”
